Former Chief Executive, Ipswich Borough Council

James Hehir OBE died in November 2009, shortly after completing 20 years as Chief Executive of Ipswich Borough Council.

James was an extraordinary leader and pioneer of public sector partnerships and he helped ensure that Ipswich, in his own words, "punched above its weight" in local government circles. James was a giant of local government; a man respected and admired by everyone. He was a man of endless energy and humour yet someone who always got things done.

He inspired, motivated and cared for staff at all levels and there are numerous people in the town now spread across the country (via promotions and other career moves) who have been influenced and inspired by James' approach to work and life.

In Ipswich he will be best known for his leading role in ensuring that Ipswich and Suffolk has its own university within a growing and dynamic Waterfront area.
