Liz Parkes
Community Librarian, Birmingham City Council
The label Community Librarian in no way tells the whole story about Liz Parkes - an unsung hero who believes passionately in what she does. She has shown exceptional dedication to the people of Shard End and has helped transform the library into a community resource young people enjoy visiting. Liz is committed to improving the service and uses innovative ways to attract new customers and engage with existing library members. Not all local residents read or want traditional library services and Liz has adapted to their needs by offering a wide range of services including story sessions for parents and babies, pre-school clubs for young children, after school craft clubs, homework clubs, children's discos and social activities. She has inspired young people to achieve and helped transform the opportunities available to them. Liz Parkes is a richly deserving nominee for this award, as the people of Shard End would testify.
